AKO Tackles Thorny Kashrus Issues; Honors Legendary Kashrus Figures

New York – This year’s Annual Membership Conference of the Association of Kashrus Organizations (AKO) which took place on Thursday November 17th was anything but routine. In The ASK the Posek session, some of the questions included; can you rely on cholov Yisroel bottles of milk in Starbucks, should a hechsher consider giving certification on recreational marijuana, and is genetically engineered food a kashrus problem. The meeting paid tribute to the late legendary kashrus authority, Rabbi Yisrael Belsky, who played such an important role in shaping modern-day kashrus.

But in a surprised moving tribute, the meeting recognized the trailblazing efforts of Rabbi Harvey Senter, Kashrus Administrator of the Kof-K. Rabbi Sholem Fishbane, the Executive Director of AKO, spoke about how much we all owe him appreciation for what he has done for kashrus.

Rabbi Menachem Genack, the CEO of OU Kashrus, also spoke about him and mentioned about how many in the OU (including himself and Rabbi Belsky) launched their careers working for him. In response, Rabbi Senter reflected on his long and rewarding career in kashrus. One night earlier, the AKO Liquor Committee met at the Kof- K office to discuss the kashrus status of such beverages as sake, scotch, beer, and Canadian Whiskey.
