Basic Kosher Prohibitions


1. Narcotics

2. Blood to the smallest drop, except for that of kosher fish

3. Meat from animals or birds not given kosher slaughter; foods derived from them

4. Foods offered in pagan sacrifice

5. Non-ruminant hoofed animals, such as lions, tigers, leopards, dogs, etc., plus products derived from these animals

6. Aquatic animals without fins or scales, such as shellfish, sea cucumber, shrimp, crab, catfish, grouper, eel, jellyfish, sea urchins, or puffer.

7. Animals which crawl on the belly, on four feet, or on many feet, such as snakes, lizards, or scorpions.

8. Flying insects which walk with four legs. Exceptions: insects with knees extending above their feet, using these longer legs to hop on the ground, including the red, yellow, and spotted gray locusts.
